I’m Steven Deheeger (he/him), a B Corp Consultant, trained by B Lab, the nonprofit behind the B Corp movement. I guide companies through B Corp Certification and recertification, and help B Corps use their voice for systemic change.

For more than 20 years, I’ve led policy advocacy and collective action for social and environmental change. I co-authored The B Corp Advocacy Toolkit, and at Harvard University I led applied research on strengthening advocacy across the B Corp movement, in collaboration with B Lab U.S. & Canada. I also serve as Advocacy Chair on the board of B Local NYC.

I’m originally from France and grew up in Chicago. Outside work, I serve on a mountain search and rescue team in Vermont and New Hampshire.

  • Certified B Corporations, or B Corps, are companies verified as meeting B Lab’s standards for social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. B Lab is the nonprofit network behind the B Corp movement. Today there are more than 10,000 B Corps in over 100 countries. You can learn more about B Corps from B Lab U.S. & Canada.

  • To certify, a company needs to be a for-profit business, incorporated in a country B Lab serves, operating for at least 12 months and not in an excluded industry. B Lab’s eligibility page has the full criteria. If you’re not eligible yet, you can still start preparing. The standards make a practical roadmap for building positive impact into how you run and grow your business, so you’re ready when the time comes.

  • No. Many companies certify on their own, and B Lab offers free tools and guidance. A consultant helps when your team is stretched, the deadline is close, or the requirements are new to you. That’s true for many existing B Corps under the new standards. If you’re not sure, a short intro call will help you decide, and I’ll tell you honestly if you don’t need me.

  • It depends on your company’s size and how many gaps you need to close. After the Readiness Assessment, you’ll have a realistic timeline. Once you submit, the timing of the audit and the certification decision rests with the independent auditor and B Lab.

  • B Lab’s certification fees scale with your annual revenue, and the independent audit has its own cost based on your company’s size and complexity. For U.S. and Canadian companies, see B Lab U.S. & Canada’s fees for new B Corps and existing B Corps.

  • My fees are separate from B Lab’s. Most companies start with a Readiness Assessment, for a fixed fee based on your company’s size. Once we know where you stand, I’ll send you a fixed quote for the work that’s left, broken down by phase, so you can choose the support you need. If you only need help with specific areas, I also offer hourly support.

  • B Lab’s new standards, officially called Standards V2, replace points-based scoring with requirements every company must meet, scaled to its size, and an independent, accredited auditor reviews your submission. A strong past score doesn’t carry over automatically, so a Readiness Assessment shows what needs updating before your recertification date. B Lab’s guide to the new standards has more detail.

  • No. Certification goes through B Lab’s process, including an audit by an independent, accredited auditor, and no consultant can promise the outcome. What I can do is make sure you understand every requirement that applies to you, your evidence is complete and organized, and you go into the audit prepared.
